Most bromeliads have a tank like structure that allows them to retain water in between the leaves. This allows them to survive for long periods without any rain. In the canopy of the rainforest this is a common problem as the heat from the sun and strong winds can dry out the vegetation very quickly, and, especially during the dry season, it can be a long period between rains.
