Asio stygius
Despite being extremely widespread across virtually the entire Neotropics, Stygian Owl is undoubtedly most easily seen in Cuba, where it is represented by the endemic subspecies, siguapa (the species' local name). This bird was present around the swimming pool at Playa Girón, in Zapata, being almost visible from the hotel bar (a popular haunt with birders). Over the years, pairs of this striking owl have been found at many regular birding destinations including Playa Larga and La Güira.
