Glaucidium siju vittatum?
This photo taken at the Guanahacabibes Peninsula is perhaps of the subspecies vittatum. However, taxonomy of this owl is somewhat confused. Garrido & Kirkconnell (2000) state that vittatum occurs on the Isle of Pines and at the Guanahacabibes, whilst others (e.g. Dickinson 2003, and even Garrido 2002, Solenodon 2: 25-52) have restricted vittatum to the Isle of Pines. Garrido (2002) also described a new subspecies, turquinensis, from the Pico Turquino, based on its much darker plumage (although this merely conforms to Gloger's Rule) with fewer spots and streaks on the upperparts. P. s. vittatum is considered to be the largest subspecies (in this respect measurements of birds from Guanhacabibes suggest that their placement in vittatum is correct) and the most heavily marked on the upperparts (note the quite bold scapular spots of the bird in the photo).
