In the early 1960's much railway traffic was lost to road haulage.At the same time , British Rail, began replacing it's stock of covered vans,with metal bodied ,long wheelbase vehicles fitted with air brakes.These also had wide opening doors,so that forklift trucks could rapidly load goods on pallets.
