Illustrating Glasgow's well-known irreverent sense of humor stands the imposing
statue of Duke of Wellington (conqueror of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815).
Some years ago, a traffic cone appeared on his head, presumably a youthful prank.
It was of course removed but mysteriously kept re-appearing, and eventually the
authorities gave up. It is such a landmark today that the statue and his traffic
cone appear in tourist guidebooks.
