A bull elk takes no notice of the snow; his attention is entirely focused on mating.
He bugles to establish his dominance over other males and to impress the females with his fitness.
As you pointed out, the object of his call appears faintly at the far right of my image. It is amazing how two photographers, shooting the same animal over a similar time frame, can make two such completely different images. Your elk is full of voice, while the same elk in my shot seems to be watching and waiting for an answer to his call.
