Eighth Place (Tie)
Storm Chaser*

by Justin Miller

Thunderstorms loom over Florida's southern peninsula each afternoon into evening during the summer...with the lowering sun the tropical atmosphere often clashes with high fronts moving across from the west to the east. This sky seemed to beg for B&W with a little grain, for an archival look. Even a simple commute home from work, and a camera pointed out a driver's side window, can feel like a storm chaser on the hunt for the next touchdown.

Thank you John. it was indeed an interesting sky. I shot this while driving, so I didn't have much control over the composition but really wanted to get the clouds. I was glad to get the sun where it did - and the palm trees were in the way but I kind of like the way they looked. I converted to B&W, and added gaussian noise in post to go for a high-grain look to emphasize the grey tones against the black.

Wow, that is an extraordinary sky. It's surreal. This is using a noisy high ISO very well.
