22-DEC-2007 Helen Betts

Eclipsed by the Greenery
by Helen Betts

Washington, D.C.

My husband, our dog and I stopped by to see the National Christmas Tree tonight on our way home from grocery shopping. I can't begin to tell you how cold it was (especially without any mittens since this was unplanned) and how utterly frustrating it was with a tripod that kept slipping during the exposure (the last time I ever use it, but it was all I had in the car). But I was pleased to be able to capture the partially hidden White House in the distance; last year I got the Washington Monument but couldn't see the White House from up close to the tree. This time it was so cold, I didn't even want to take the time to walk to the tree :-).

Lovely capture of that Christmas tree, and nice lighting on the other bits as well.

Great capture of the lighting on the tree, and I love the view of the White House in the darkness!

Wow, excellent captured given the circumstances and all the stuff (the flag and the White House and the Christmas tree) you wanted to show us. The tree and the flag are excellent focus points (bright and colorful) and as a bonus we get a glimpse of the White House and Mr. Bush's indoor tree. Thanks for un-hiding this.

Thanks, Sky and Frank, for the comments. Frank, I think it is actually Bush's own Christmas tree in the window. I took this one at the same timehttp://www.pbase.com/helenpb/image/90705610 (far easier to capture than the tree and the White House, LOL) and it doesn't look like a reflection to me here. Helen

Cool shot! I wonder what it is in the one window of the White House. Is it the reflection of the National Christmas Tree or is it Mr. Bush's own one shining from the inside? Cheers, Frank

Helen - that's so gorgeous. The flag in the background is like a perk. The tree is dazzling. An extremely successful photo and well-worth braving those bitter elements. And I admire you for doing such!
