A Pattern of Neglect
by Helen Betts

Washington, D.C.

Taken at Union Station. I had originally wanted to photograph the full arcade, but first there was a big cable stretching across it that had never been there before. Then the images I did take -- without any crowds, for a change -- were distorted in a way unusual even for the H5, which always produces severe architectural distortion. But I decided I liked this one, and although I had taken several trying to eliminate the man (who appeared to be a homeless person), I found that he added something I liked to it.

Thanks, everybody, for your comments! Daniel, I processed this twice to try to salvage the "P" but because the image had to be straightened, only a tad, I lost most of it. Even trying to adjust just for distortion had the same result. :-( Helen

Love it, Helen: Beautiful patterns on wall, ceiling and floor! Only one single tiny nitpick: if I only were able to read the "P" of postal... db.

Very nice, orderly...yet not.

Lovely pattern indeed - and the lighting is very nice. I like the detail fo the postal museum in the background, and the disruption of the pattern by the man leaning against the wall.

Another great pattern image, Helen. Lovely!

Definitely the man adds to the image. IMHO it is always good to have something that breaks the symmetry to make it much more interesting. Great contribution!

Wonderful take Helen... The addition of a peeking person and a bike as well as a few splash of red really add flavor the the shot...

Super image, Helen. So many different patterns. I agree with you, I like the guy in the photo!! He does add a "real life" element to the image.

Wow, this one has lots of shapes, lines, and cool patterns! I think the red bows add just the right amount of color to the image. Again, your composition is excellent!
