Not a scene I would want to photograph myself. But as a theme photograph, the composition and the processing treatment work very well in conveying passage - the focus point surrounded by a circle of blur could be conveyed as the opening of the portal for the former living energy of the animal to transition to whatever state it will take next.

Thank you guys for the comments!

Yes it is not an "easy" shot. Death is a hard story to sell. Anyway I tried to show respect to the rat, which normally is regarded as vermin, by getting down to it's level. Then it is less threatening and I tried to enhance the peaceful look by the soft effect of the bright background. This shoould put things into perspective and really underline the transition away from the world.

Tabrizi, I have used a filter sw "virtualPhotographer" which you can get at www.optikvervelabs.com for free. The actual setting was "ambience" if I remember correct. This filter set allows me to work out the effect very convinient and still allows incluence. I am usinfg it together with IrfanView.

Gosh, it looks so cute in this state. My daughter & my son each had pet rats for years. I think my son still had his when he got married. ;)
It's a good catch, Frank. Great angle & DOF (if one can speak of such things in these circumstances).
