I have to agree about the uncomfortable look, although I gather this is a very typical nest site and construction for this species, a Black-faced Woodswallow (Artamus cinereus) -- found over most of Australia except the eastern/southeastern coast. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if it were a trifle peeved by the many human visitors passing by, since this nest was at eye level, literally at arm's length from a path through a sanctuary (natural bush setting) and completely unshielded by any immediate shrubbery. It didn't seem put off by the people at all -- there's dedication for you; I guess the urge to reproduce is very powerful! In truth I don't know whether this character was the "layer" or Dad doing his shift, as they both look the same. - Mike

I agree with Carlos, the bird looks very uncomfortable, like he just kinda crash landed there:) I find this adds some mystery to the picture, like what is he doing and why such cramped quarters for a nest? Fun image though, I hope he made out alright. tcoen
