Good for the Body*
by mlynn

I realize now that I simply don't know how to photograph food :).
I don't know how to present it or light it.
The lighting seems especially difficult.

Melanie, I really like this image. The richness of the chocolate is quite evident. ---Deb

Beautiful composition and detail here, Melanie. I'm not a big chocolate fan, but this makes me hungry to look at! Helen

Thank you Mike and Photocat, I appreciate it. Mike, I have to admit there were alot more (and very strange colored) highlights on this image that I cloned out. I'm afraid this image required alot more post-processing than it deserved.

Photocat, any information on the light tent would be welcomed, thank you. And as far as the Mickey thing goes...as I started to take the pictures, I realized that it looked like Mickey, and that was not what I was going for :). I rotated it to try to bring more focus to the human-looking swirl and less to the 'Mickey'. --Melanie

Have you ever heard of a "Hidden Mickey"? It's a design feature at the Disney parks where they arrange normal items in a way that it creates a subliminal image of the Mickey Mouse logo when viewed a certain way. It's usually not obvious unless you look for it. Kind of like in this shot :-) Anyway, for less than $20 you can make a very usable light tent with a few pieces of 1/2" pvc and a white bedsheet. I have 3 flexible desk lamps with regular 60w bulbs that I use with it and it works great. Just be sure to adjust the white balance. Let me know if you'd like more info on it.

I can tell you, Melanie...your chocolate pieces here sure look appetizing to me, especially that swirly one :) Your composition is simple and interesting. I think your exposure is good too...and I like your catch of those highlights. The piece of decorative fabric is also a nice touch. I think it's a nice photo, Melanie...I hope you're not feeling too frustrated. I'm gonna' send you an email. MFC
