Neat shot - I like the color and wider composition of this version. I love the title, too!

Well, I gotta comment on this.
I still think it's a great pic, but the pink doesn't work for me, neither does the white "frame".
But mainly the composition of this version has toally removed the tension of the original, which was what really made the first version for me.
Oh well, I guess the textbook approach wins.

UPDATE. Finally I switched the image. The second version from the demo folder is now here in the eligible gallery. Now it is getting confusing with respect to all the valuable comments that were provided so far. Thanks a lot for those! All the comments below no apply for the image in the demo folder. :-)
Mike, to past a link seems not to work when not being logged in with a pbase account. It gives a warning that to prevent spam no links are allowed.

I like very much the idea. I think I like this version better too, but for me the difference is very small. I would consider to crop from the bottom of this, to move the turning signs more to the foreground (well, this would be version #3 :) Cheers, MCsaba

This version is far too realistic than the pink road one. I like it ! Regarding guessing about the identity of the artist, it appears to be the work of Barbara Heide ... as it is her style to expose roads and highways. But may be I am wrong.

A good textbook analysis, Mike.
My response was just visceral.

An interesting dilemma, Anon. Everyone is going to see this differently, so here's my take on it. I prefer the warmer toning of the other (Demo folder) version, but that's strictly personal. In terms of geometry -- which may be a bit less personal and, arguably, more of a general principle -- I still prefer the Demo one, and here's why: with a square image the viewer can end up torn between what "leads" towards what in the subject. While with some pics this is not an issue, I think it makes a difference here. We have a lone car at the bottom of a deep channel, and the latter's main role is really (to me, anyway) to emphasise the isolation, and perhaps relative smallness, of the car. Now a narrow vertical (portrait) strip will do this very well, and so does the relatively wide expanse of the (landscape) Demo version. I just think the square aspect ratio here doesn't convey that so effectively. Anyway, that's my 2 cents' worth! :-)

Regarding the frame around the other image, well while some people hate frames they do have their occasional use and I don't mind a frame that nicely complements the image or has some other significant function. In this case I agree with you that the image toning does need something to stop it merging with the gallery background.

By the way, you can in fact place a hyperlink in these comments, but you need to just paste in the naked URL with nothing fancy around it. A year or two ago, you used to be able to tidy it up by putting it inside an [A HREF] tag, but that no longer works as I gather you've discovered. Here's the raw link to your other version:http://www.pbase.com/stfchallenge/image/65744909/original

I left a comment in the demo gallery which said I like this version better for color balance & framing.
If it ain't broke....
I could deconstruct why I love this shot ad inf...but let others enjoy it w/o undue influence...

inframan, thanks for your comment. When reading it I was just about to replace the version with a rework. What can I do now? :-) I put the rework into the demo folder (sorry, for some reason I cannot post the link directly here). Please let me know wat you think.

Excellent! Could not be improved, imo.
A classic.
