Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of tickytacky
Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same
There's a green one and a pink one and a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.


This is a view of a large shanty town from the citadel.

What a wonderful shot. I really like all the colors and the way it fades in the background giving it a nice perspective. Makes one appreciate having a little living space. All those people living in those little boxes. -- Chris

Thank you everyone for your comments. These kinds of neighborhoods were usually built as "gecekondu," literally "put up in a night." People did this because the law used to be that if you could put a roof on a house overnight, then it couldn't be torn down the next day. I think the law has changed, as you don't see these "developments" so much any more, but the remnants of those days are still around. Needless to say, the houses are packed together and lacking in some very basic services. I shot this from the car -- the same area as in the picture:http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/image/26835346 Helen

Amazing photo again, Helen. Perfect song too! Wow, highly populated there. No smog or cars? I can't even see the roads.
