Some background on this photo.
First, to understand the 'scale' of the scene, 18 people are standing at the 'entrance' to the Narrows, beside the tree. (They are somewhat discernable in this downsized version, but are easily identified in the full size version.) (also interesting: despite the bright sun in this photo, 15 minutes after this photo was taken, a thunderstorm moved in and hit us with a torrential downpour that caused numerous, numerous waterfalls to cascade down the sides of this slot canyon. Quite gorgeous, but impossible to take a picture due to the excessive moisture in the air in which we were standing. One waterfall quickly became so powerful that it blocked our way out of the canyon. We ended up just sitting and watching the waterfall and, after the rain subsided and the waterfall calmed down, we finally walked out.)
Second, this 'vertical panorama' is a composite of six shots. Color balance was manual, zoom was at about 88mm (35mm equivalent). Before stitching, I applied a 'curves' adjustment to each individual photo, with the intent of not only adjusting the colors right, but to attempt to balance and obtain a consistent exposure between all six photos. I next applied, to each photo, a 'contrast mask,' in an effort to capture the entire dynamic range resulting from the deep shadows on the side walls versus the bright wall of rock in the center of the image. After this, I simply let the Panorama Factory wizard take over, importing all six photos, rotating them 90 CCW (to permit stitching), then exporting the final image back to photoshop, rotating 90 CW (to get the image upright again), and resizing for posting.
Howdy
