This is a great portrait, you really captured very well the character of the subject. Excellent work.

An outstanding capture of "An everyday person"....looks to be part of Americana. B/W works exceptionally well here and I agree with Linda....very intense eyes/facial expression. Nice one Eric. Bill

The ISO was just where I routinely leave it for general-purpose work. The flash was a fill flash for the fellow's face, and the high shutter was intended to keep the flash from creating harsh background shadows. Didn't work out too well; the picture was badly unbalanced (forearm not blown but way too bright, mainly) and needed a lot of rebalancing. Also was too red in color and had color noise, so I converted to BW using the method where you create two hue/saturation layers, set the top one to "color" with a value of zero and then adjust hue on the bottom one -- this gives you the ability to balance the midtones to your satisfaction.

So the real answer is, I had an idea of what I was doing, but got something a bit different, then found a way to make it work. (Sorry to shatter any illusions you may have had!). ERic

Nice work, Eric. I have a question - were you using those settings (1/1000, iso 200, flash) to get a specific effect ? I like the result. -john(ebones)

Paul Newman eyes -- thanks! You too can achieve Paul Newman eyes with one pass of the dodge tool set to, 17% saturation, highlights only. Size the brush to the size of the eye. Eric Hatch

Really nice Eric, I like the b&w and graininess but my favorite part of the image is the Paul Newman eyes ;-) Linda L.

I agree with both Andy and Mike. The graininess adds a really appropriate "rough" touch. Fremiet

For a lot of folks, cigarette breaks are a routine part of the day. I think the B&W works well here; and the lighting/posture helps accentuate the hands...photojournalistic. MFC
