Foramen = Opening


The highlighted openings (sacral foramina)
are where nerve roots exit the spine to supply the lower body and legs with sensation and motor control.
The coccyx (tailbone) has been reinforced with crossed steel wires.

Thanks for your comments ! Katherine, the openings look sharp, but fortunately the nerves are pretty well padded as they leave the spine. Cheryl, I'm a 'sawbones'(orthopaedic surgeon)and I build these models from surplus (used) surgical implants. Andy, I actually removed L2 and L5, so its pretty close. -john

John, make no bones about it :), you sure come up with some very interesting images using your favorite subjects. This one has really nice lighting that accentuates the foramina...nice clarity too. Good idea. MFC

Really cool image! It's interesting to wonder how all this complexity evolved. Those little openings don't look smooth enough - like they might cut the nerves going through there.
