Hi all, These are concretions which are formations in calsium rich sandstone where small objects like leaves or insect parts or whatever are trapped in sand and then over time (Thousands of years) this turns to sandstone. The imperfections create a focus for nodules of sand and calsium to form around. As erosion occurs the coccreted stone is tougher than the matrix so concretions can be seen. This particular one came from Anza borrego desert park just west of the Salton Sea in California.
