Airplane Grasshopper, Eumastax vittata (Eumastacidae)

Tiputini Forest Reserve, Prov. Orellana, Ecuador

A female airplane grasshopper perches on the chewed leaves of a small tree, where nymphs have been feeding extensively. Note the gravid abdomen and serrated ovipositor, which is used for inserting eggs in vegetation.
