Ground Beetle (Carabidae: Scaritinae)

Tiputini Forest Reserve, Prov. Orellana, Ecuador

Scaritine ground beetles have a distinctive waist-like constriction between the thorax and abdomen. This individual was prowling a stream side at night, probably in search of arthropod prey to snap up with its wicked-looking mandibles.
