Lubber Grasshopper, Aeolacris octomaculata (Romaleidae)

Tiputini Forest Reserve, Prov. Orellana, Ecuador

This massive grasshopper is scaling a Ceiba tree some 15 metres above the forest floor. Note the long hind tibial spines, which can inflict a painful jab when used in self-defence.
