Neotanypeza plotoplax (Tanypezidae)

Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, Prov. Pichincha, Ecuador

Tanypezid flies are a bit calyptrate-like in appearance but are entirely unrelated. Some, like this undescribed Neotanypeza, are often seen perching on exposed vegetation. They are skittish and difficult to photograph.

This species was described by a colleage O. Lonsdale:
Lonsdale, O. 2013. Review of the families Tanypezidae and Strongylophthalmyiidae, with a revision of Neotanypeza Hendel (Diptera: Schizophora). Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology 641(1): 1–60. doi:10.5479/si.19436696.641.1
