Embiratermes barrier

Yasuní National Park, Prov. Orellana, Ecuador

While worker termites were busy sealing the nest breach, a marauding gliding ant (Cephalotes sp.) entered the vicinity and made contact with the soldier termites. The ant was instantly attacked and responded by curling into a spiny ball, while additional soldiers rapidly formed a defensive barrier. The incumbents seemed to do little damage to the armoured interloper, although the Cephalotes eventually dropped off the mound, taking along several soldiers still clingling on to its legs.
