Alien! Parasitic Flesh Fly (Sarcophagidae)

Yasuní National Park, Prov. Orellana, Ecuador

Certain sarcophagids develop as endoparasitoids of cicadas. Adult females are phonotaxic, homing in on the insect's song and depositing the active larva on the host. This mature larva emerging from a small cicada was observed shortly after the host insect was collected.
