June 15, 2004 - Kids

Ann Arbor, Mich.

I grabbed this shot of a group of school kids in downtown Ann Arbor during my lunch hour today.
I was wondering what the thoughts are out there on these kind of angle shot. It seems to be the
rage among many news photographers, including those at my paper. It drives one of my fellow editors,
who is a former news photographer, nuts. He absolutely detests them and rags about them whenever
we run one. I'm a bit ambivalent myself - when done right I like them, but there are other times where
it just seems like artsy for artsy sake.

I like the "angle" in this shot... it adds a feeling of chaos to the shot which works really well... spoken from the point of view of a mom of a son pretty near this age!!

Works fine with this subject - i'm a fan of at least trying different viewpoints, rather than always shooting at eye height. having said that, it can look overdone sometimes, so always best to go with your gut instinct, I should think!

I guess my feelings on this (my own photo) is that the angle gives motion or movement to the boys in a natural flowing way. If it were angled the other way, it would not work because you would get a sense of natural motion.

I think it works great with this image, mainly because i get to see more of whats behind the boys. On some other examples i've seen i wasnt too impressed. I guess it just depends on the subject and compostition.

Interesting question and one I've wondered about often. I'm not very good at the angled shots -- usually when I try it the photo appears too contrived. Other folks do it and the photo looks great. On your shot here I think it works well. It gives the photo a certain energy that I am not sure it would have if it weren't angled.

I think the camera angle works great in this composition!

I think it works for this shot. I'm usually not a huge fan of odd camera angles, but in this case, I think it makes the shot more interesting. I have a friend that shoots *exclusively* with crazy angles and it drives me batty! :) I end up tilting my head the entire time I'm viewing her shots, but she thinks it's a fun way to shoot -- we joke about it all the time.

Okay, I've come back to look at this several times as I've thought about what you wrote. For this picture, it works well. Adds interest to the scene and draws attention to the two boys in the front.

I like the angles - they make one look twice and give an energy to a scene that might otherwise appear commonplace.

I like it!
