EXPERIMENTS WITH LIGHT

I saw this woman sitting on the steps of this immense cathedral (St Patricks?) and thought
she would make a wonderful photograph. When I got home and saw the photo
I was completely disappointed. Almost a year has past since I shot the
photo and it still bothers me.
So, I decided to experiment and see if I could find something to improve it.
The main problem seemed to be that while the woman and the building were
both great looking, the light was not at all interesting or inspiring.

The photo you see on this page is the result of experimenting with lighting the photo
differently. if you click "next" you will see the disappointing original.
and here is the version of it that I posted last year on my pad:
ORIGINAL POST

I think I understand what you mean about the disappointment in the potential . . . I see it too but I have no idea how to bring out the contrasts you are looking for. All that being said, I thin you did as good a job as possible bringing out the contrasts . . .go back there and see if she is still there . . . .HA!

Right on. The lighting makes a huge difference. Good work.

Very well done. This immediately caught my eye. The B/W works and now the lighting is right on.

Ya know, how many images do we see in the course of the year?? 1000's? 10,000s? Even looking at the thumb in my favorites folder I smiled when I saw this one because I remembered it so vividly. One of my all time favorites. I think the bw conversion without the spot light effect is best. She's no different than the crowds (out of frame) you mentioned, and so shouldn't be singled out -she should just meld with the expansive cathedral. IMNSHO :)

My what an amazing transformation. Yes, you were right, although I remember the original and I thought it was superb....but the light adds so much.

You are as talented in front of the computer as you are behind the camera. This turned out really good.
