Colt 1849 Pocket Dragoon 08_09_05.jpg

I'm still practicing at the old gun product shot type of thing.I have lots of coffee table type gun books and I subscribe to a few fine fire arm magazines. I have always been impressed with the photos of the guns in those types of publications. So I have been practicing at this type of photo. You never know when Shooting Sportsman will need someone to shot a cover photo.

This is a Colt 1849 Pocket Dragoon manufactured in Italy for Colt Blackpowder Arms. The hat is my old worn working cowboy hat. I have had the spurs for 40 years. They were a gift from an old neighbor. He told me that they were issued to him when he was in the US Cavalry during the 1920's.

You've had the spurs for 40 years and your wife is 25, you're one lucky guy!

I have always admired old guns, I grew up in Ranch country and have been around firearms my entire life, but until your pictures I never considered the artistic value.

~some days you make me feel like giving up..... but then I realize I just need to work harder~

Jim, the little copper pellets in the left are percussion caps. You were correct they are what the hammer strikes to fire the gun.

The cap contains fulminate of mercury, a chemical compound which explodes when struck. It is the same stuff as is used in the paper or plastic caps in cap gun. When the cap is struck by the hammer, the flames from the exploding fulminate of mercury go through a little hole into the cylinder and ignite the black-powder inside to propel the ball down the barrel. A "Cap and Ball Revolver" is a common name for this type of handgun.

Great composition and such warm colors. It's total different as our gun. Seehttp://www.pbase.com/image/47482644

Bill, I'm not a gun guy but these photo's are starting to grow on me, the workmanship for their time is incredible. For us gun ignorant's what are the little pellet thing's on the left? Is that like a cap that light's it off? Beautiful setup here, I love the texture of that heirloom table but that fresh scratch below the butt is a little distracting but I guess it will fill in like the rest over time.
