Ian, Minolta's Dimage cameras are great. I really liked my Dimage 7 that is now owned and used by my daughter Mindihttp://www.pbase.com/mworwood . One of the reasons I switched to a Digital SLR was to get shots like this. The long shutter lag of the Dimage made action shots of moving subjects very hard. The other minor problem with the Dimage and other similar cameras is noise/grain when set at ISO higher than 100ISO. The Canon 10D DSLR allows me much more creative flexibility; it takes a picture the instant I push the shutter release and I can bump the ISO up when I need more shutter speed in low light.

On your camera you want to set it to A (aperture priority) I would then stop it down to f/6 or so and set it at about as wide as it will go around 35mm. That will give you enough depth of field that focus won't be critical. After that with the Dimage, I would try to click as fast as you can while panning with the subject. With the long shutter lag of the D5 it will be tough but I don't think impossible.

William, Thanks for coming back with the technical stuff but some of it went straight over my head. I'm guessing that "Av mode, AI servo (predictive) focus, used all seven focus points" are Canon settings? I'm using a Minolta Dimage 5 which is somewhat less sophisticated, so, if it's not too much trouble, could you 'dumb it down' a bit? I note from some of your landscapes around Jan '03 you were using a Dimage 7 so you'll know [roughly] the 5's capability.
I'm still not sure whether to be inspired or demoralised by your photography. The colours and vibrancy really are wonderful [Wandaful?]. Regards, Ian.

Ian, this was shot pretty straight forward as to technique. I set the Canon 10D to Av mode, AI servo (predictive) focus, used all seven focus points and shot continuous. I stopped the Canon 24-70/f2.8 L down a bit and just had Wanda swim buy underwater as I clicked the shutter. After that it was just find a photo that the composition worked and was PG rated from the 25 or so photos I took.
