Spider Rock

Canyon de Chelly, AZ

Spider Rock is actually twin spires, the taller of which is apparently the tallest free-standing spire in the world at 800 feet. The rock was named after Spider Woman, a deity who, according to legend, taught the Navajo how to weave. Not that she's all sweetness and light though - the legend also says that she captures misbehaving children and carries them to the top of the spires, leaving their bones to bleach in the sun.

Stephanie, Talking god lives on the shorter spire according to Navajo tradition. A gods suite in Canyon de Chelly! Good photo! It made me homesick! Kerry Tingley
