Spider Rock is actually twin spires, the taller of which is apparently the tallest free-standing spire in the world at 800 feet. The rock was named after Spider Woman, a deity who, according to legend, taught the Navajo how to weave. Not that she's all sweetness and light though - the legend also says that she captures misbehaving children and carries them to the top of the spires, leaving their bones to bleach in the sun.
