Prayers at New Year, Shanghai 2004

It was New Years day in the year of the Monkey February 2004. I went between the shrine and the temple to capture the faces. If you look at the image closely, there are so many faces, each with their own expressions, each with their own thoughts.

I like the intent and atmosphere in this image. But how about grabbing one of the images from your cemetary series which are really powerful and personal ?

Yes, Kal, this is abstract, incongruous and rich in human values - the black and white rendering removes it from reality, its smoke obscures rather than reveals, its vantage point confronts the viewer with flames and smoke and fervent worshippers, and it brings it all down to one memorable human value: faith. This is a fine image, as strong as any you show us here. Unlike most of your other images, this photograph does not describe. Rather, it expresses.
