I am quite surprised there are people who are ashamed of where they come from.Honestly the type of house in the picture are like 80% of the houses we have in Uganda. So this is like normal for the majority of the people who can barely afford 2 meals a day, medical care, clothes. I believe this was such a good picture and if you really love your country then it is time to catch a vision and work towards changing the situation for the better.

i agree and disagree with some of your opinions! I am a ugandan lived most of my life out of uganda. Fair play you do get houses like that in uganda, but we also have good houses forget the mansions, but houses that civilians live in. I am living in the 'western world' and quite frankily there is also shire poority,but just cos its not televised on Tv like how often africa is televised. "feed the hungry"!

I am a Ugandan Currently Living in the UK. I do not see anything wrong with this picture,
These are not the worst houses in Uganda.However In Uganda one will find Houses which cost 1 million Pounds or more. One should not be ashamed of where they came/come from but should be proud of their culture, and success in life. My parents and grand parents were born and raised in worse houses than these, but I am proud to be A Ugandan. I think the picture would have been better shown with some action like people or animals around, and maybe tell where in Uganda it was taken.

Not at all, I was not there on a mission to photograph all the houses in Uganda - I spent very little time in Kampala - I only really passed through Uganda on the way to Rwanda (although lingered a while as Chrstmas fell in that time).

I took these, as I said before, because I liked the smoke filtering from the roofs - I thught they looked peaceful and inviting, myself.

Maybe it is the title that is upsetting to you and Lena - although it is just explanative, ie I am in Uganda and these are houses. Maybe if I change it to 'houses in Uganda', so you don't assume I am implying that all 'Ugandan Houses' are like this one - which I was not?

I'll give that a go and see what the feedback is.

(By the way, I'm not being facetious or anything, but when you say you agree with the pictures, but don't like how I took them...what does that mean?)

I agree with the pictures, I dont like the way you took them. Uganda does have some outstanding houses especially in kampala and other areas. You've made it sound as if thats the type of a house each ugandan live in.

Well Lena, quite apart from that fact that in much of the western world - although I cannot speak for the USA - there is a thing called freedom of expression. Whether you like it or not the photos stay.

There is a second point that is if that is what is there, in the country then it is fair to show them - there's is no point in pretending that there are no houses like this in Uganda - that would just be stupid. Surely it is better to draw attention to the fact that poverty exists in the world...otherwise people in countries, for example America, can just pretend that everything out there is rosy, just as it is in their little corner of the good old US of A.

Thirdly, what makes you say these houses are slums?! These are not slums, they are traditionally built houses. OK maybe they are simple affairs, but there is nothing wrong with that. This is how these people live. A slum to me conjures up images of inner-city overcrowding. Dirty streets and no beauty. These people live amongst nature, and their houses are spread out enough to afford them some privacy.

I took this photo because I liked the way the smoke seeped out from the roofs as the families settled down to prepare their evening meals. I saw a great number of houses like this in Uganda - of course I also saw a few extravagant mansions of rich people. Do you really think that I would be representing the country better by showing pictures of these?

You may not like the world, but there is no point in burying your head in the sand and pretending it doesn't exist. Maybe you are ashamed of your mother country, but don't spread that shame to those who are still there.

i didnt want the way you put those funny houses [slums] people who dont know uganda may think even we who r here in the usa used to live in such yet there r nice houses but in all u decide to picture those u r ashaming yo country nway ma opinion is dont ever do itcoz people who see this with me here really say all houses in uganda r like thatpliz dont do it otuswaza.
