The Bonnabel Oak

Metairie, Louisiana

One can see how huge this oak is when it is compared to the huge house behind it.
The structure of an ancient live oak can be seen best in February and March when the oak sheds its old leaves and simultaneously puts on its new leaves.
All of Alfred Bonnabel's children grew up in this house and their memories of this beautiful tree are heartwarming.
Alfred Bonnabel developed much of what is today known as Old Metairie. The Bonnabel plantation ran from the River Ridge to Lake Pontchartrain. His family were mostly educators in Jefferson Parish and a few of his children who still live in the area are octagenerians and older. There is a public school and a Boulevard named for Alfred Bonnabel.

I lived just behind the Bonnabel house on Phosphor Ave. Spent many happy hours of my life playing in that tree. Fell out of it routinely.....! Visited when it was owned by Bonnabel family and later a school and again the Ballinger Family.

I am the grandaughter of Alfred Eugene Bonnabel Jr. He grew up in this house and I have heard several stories of his happy memories. I would love for my mother ,who is a Bonnabel to come tour our father's home. Great picture.
