So much of the media coverage focused only on the Ninth Ward. However, Lakeview suffered the currents and forces of rushing flood waters from the 17th Street Canal and almost every house had water up to the ceiling. Many people returned to their homes in the early morning when the winds were dying down, only to drown a few hours later when the levees broke. Many clung to roofs or survived in attics for days until rescued.
The water line on the outside is from the level of water that sat for three weeks before the pumps were restored enough to pump the water out of the city, which is 3 feet below sea level.
Many died in their attics and were not found for weeks until National Guard crews came through with cadaver dogs.
Lakeview is a part of the City that is the tax base of the City. Physicians, lawyers, plumbers, electricians, policeman and fireman live in Lakeview. It will be a long time before this area is restored, if ever.
