A Cistern

San Francisco Plantation - Lions, Louisiana

Rain water was collected from the roof into the cistern to be used in the house. Most cisterns were simple and made of cypress planks held together with rings. This cistern had a fancy top on it to match the architecture of the house. There was one cistern on each side of the house.
We had a cistern when I was growing up and I wish it was still there as I could use the water to water the gardens; chemical free.

A lot prettier than the PVC ones on my house :(

Great shot, cisterns were all over in south Louisiana. My old aunt living down Grand Calliou near Houma had one. EPA would condemn the water that came out of it, but we drank it and are still alive.
