17th Street Canal Historical Marker Placed at Historical Site of Devastation-Five Years Later

17th Street Canal at Bellaire Drive

As the young trumpeter played "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" a marker was unveiled to commemorate the breaking of the floodwall (a new one seen in background) the morning of Hurricane Katrina. The plaque says it all.
It will be five years on Sunday that our world and our lives were turned upside down. The event is still so clear in my mind. Traversing the City for months after the catastrophe and taking photos of it all was a way of coping for me. Yet, today at this ceremony it all seemed too much.

I spent this weekend with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat, as the TV news re-aired scenes and stories from Katrina for this 5th anniversary. It is just overwhelming.

You can be so proud of what you have done the past five years.....keeping all of this devastating story in the forefront. You were and are amazing and I hope you know how important your contribution is.

And a fantastic job you did showcasing the devastation Ms Coleen. Wouldn't think that
this would rate a historic marker, but then it was a catastrophic event.

Memories flooding back. A beautiful song that he is playing and I know that this will be with everyone for a long time. Thanks for sharing it with us.

A potent reminder of how vulnerable we humans are in the face of Nature's forces.

Elaine and I have been counting down the days since the start of the month. I was not there and it is still very difficult to believe.
Thank you so much for this important gallery. Vote.

Too bad our government can't rebuild the city quicker. It would really help the economy, be a better way to spend our money and it would be great for New Orleans.

whether the agency can be held financially liable or not, no financial penalties would restore all those people to their families. A poignant tribute - hard to believe it was already five years ago.
