Grand Isle, Louisiana in 2008

What Once Was

The huge oil gush from the BP well has reached these beaches for two weeks now. The beach is closed as are the shrimping, crabbing and oyster fishing grounds. Farther to the east are the pelican rookeries where the pelicans and their babies are dying from the oil. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see a beautiful pelican covered in oil and unable to reach the nest where her babies are. It is cruel, unjustifiable and beyond human comprehension to watch what is happening to our Louisiana coast and wetlands and our fish and fowl. To see the majestic brown pelicans covered with oil and even unable to walk is beyond hearbreaking.
It is soul wrenching. One wonders how some members of the human race can watch this happen, people who have the ability to correct some of it, and not do everything humanly possible. The federal government and BP surely cannot be resting well in their beds at night and it is my wish that they are not.

The fruits of deregulation. Maybe now people will stop and think before they vote!

Such a pretty coast-line - what a disaster!

I'm with you 100%.....it sickens me to see this beautiful place now tainted and effecting so many things.

Again you are there and able to let the world know what it is really like.....keep it up, Coleen. It is your mission.

A tragedy for sure, seeing those suffering birds on the television brings tears to the eyes.

Well documented Coleen. It sure is a tragedy and one wonders why not more safeguards are put in place. Actually one knows why not. It all has to do with $$$$$$ and maintaining our standard of living.

The media has been starting to show some of the heart wrenching images of the birds covered in oil and it's just sickening to see. I can't imagine what it's like in person to see it all :-(

Once again you are able to accurately document things the mass media is missing. A real life spin!

The whole situation is heart wrenching, I wish they were able to get things under control a little faster than they are.
