Waguespack House

Vacherie, Louisiana

This type of construction was the only way to build on the Great River Road in the late 1700's and 1800's. The Mississippi River overflowed its banks occasionally and the water merely flowed under the houses. Plus, the house had many openings allowing for the River breezes to flow through.
Without electricity and no running water, the cistern was used to collect water for household use. There was a spout leading from the roof that brought the rainwater into the cypress cistern.
Unfortunately, this house was left on its own and is no longer here. Just a part of our historical past on the Great River Road.
See Next for a picture of the house in all its splendor.
