Purple has always been associated with royalty but was not the color of choice for Hawaiian Royalty. There are very few indigenous plants bearing purple flowers. Almost all have been imported in to Hawaii in relatively recent history. Some are having disastrous impact on the environment and the native flora. e.g. Banana Poha, Medinilla, and the Glory Bush.
