It is one of the largest Heiau in existence. Built during the ascendancy of Kamehameha (1790-91) to be the eventual supreme ruler of the Hawaiian islands.
He ordered the construction to ensure that the prophecies surrounding the unification of the islands under his rule would be fulfilled.
On completion he was able to unite the islands under his rule via conquest or treaty.
