The Kalaupapa lighthouse can be barely seen about a fifth of the way from the tip of the peninsula.
After decommissioning the lighthouse there was a move to abandon it but spirited lobbying saved it as a historic landmark.
Many Hansen's disease patients looked on the lighthouse as their only means of keeping their spirits up.
