An Old World spice found initially in Dutch island colonies from tropical regions, Malabar, and Run Island.
Gradually the British broke the monopoly and the spice can be found commercially grown in many British colonies such as Grenada in the West Indies.
The nutmeg seed which is covered by another spice, the brilliant red latticework of mace, is readily seen in this specimen.
