The black background is natural. It is a dark bush. I planned this shot by putting a feeder on the rail of my deck so the bird would be back-lit by the sun and illuminated in front by reflection off my light gray deck wall. I then tried to catch the hummingbird as it moved back and forth to and from the feeder.
