2004: Canon EOS 20D & Nikon D70

Two hot models from 2004 that transcended the game
for their respective manufacturers.

The Canon EOS 20D featured an 8.2mp sensor, speedy operation,
and amazing high iso image quality, for its time. In my opinion,
this is the model that started the high iso revolution that
continues to this day.

The Nikon D70 featured a 6mp sensor, the amazing "Phat Pixel" sensor,
speedy operation, and offered superb image quality in an "affordable"
package. The D70 was a sensation when it was released, a best seller
for Nikon. Nikon took what they had in the more expensive D100, refined
it, and offered it in a less expensive, but just as capable package
in the D70.

I had and loved both models! Sold them when it was time to upgrade.
Today, I still believe these two models hold up well to more recent
models, especially if you utilize their strengths. Both highly
recommended!

Spot on observation, Sam. The start of the pixel war right here. I wish Canon had gone the route of the less is more in regards to the mega pixel race, give me phat pixels !

Seems like so long ago yet it really wasn't. I remember that I had purchased my 10D just about 6 months before they released the 20D. I had signed a couple of weddings to shoot and went to the camera shop to look at adding a 20D only to end up walking out of the shop with my 1D MarkII. I later sold the 10D and bought a 20D as a second body. I was a solid body and well adjusted.

However, this image was shot with a Canon, Sam, so it's not a fair comparison. Shoot this with a Nikon and you'll easily see that the Nikon D70 was better! :-)

Great shot of these two classics... BV

Funnily enough it was the Canon 20D which first got me thinking about getting a dSLR, by the time I had saved up the money, the 30D had come out which I had my heart set on buying. Then my Hot Water system broke, so I had to cut my budget. The guy at the camera shop recommend the Nikon D50 cause it was the cheapest dSLR on the market at the time and the rest is history... BTW at every amusement park and boat cruise in Japan, the staff camera people are still using Nikon D70 or Nikon D70S, probably because of the high speed flash sync.

Great presentation. The 20D was my first DSLR and my son still use it for his sideline job. v
