I wouldn't worry about the guy with the expensive lens. I see so many great pictures taken with cheap compacts etc. He may have been a great photographer but a lot of them can be summed up in one phrase " All the gear, no idea" Keep up the good work.
You've got a good shot with the D80, Jim - lovely straight and curvey composition, sharp throughout (difficult at f2.8) and soft muted colours...certainly does it for me! V
