Wainwright State Office Building

St. Louis, Misssouri

This building, designed by Adler & Sullivan and erected in 1890-91, was one of the first of the "modern" office buildings, which used steel as the primary structure and hung the brick façade from the steel framework. Only ten stories, but it is the prototype for almost every other skyscraper.

There is great detail here, so please look in "original" and examine the intricate friezework.

You might also notice three people who appear twice in the same picture. Some might think that, since this is a state office building, those duplicate people are voters. But it's more likely that they are the result of this being a merge of two photographs.
