January 31st: Grading Myself

San Diego, CA

On Jan. 14 I bravely said:
“Here is the deal folks (drum roll please)… all this month I am posting undoctored images. That means there are no parts of the frame that were not in it in the first place. This is my modest effort to try some new learning for me… shooting straight. ;-) Everything is genuine.

How did I do? Well I’m giving myself a B. There were 2 or 3 that were desaturated, and one that had a major filter fix added to hide the grain. Several eagle-eyed members commented on these “transgressions.” Only one image was an out-and-out violation; albeit one that was posted before I made the promise.

I did learn some things and posted a couple of images that were real winners. Applying curves carefully certainly helped improve several of my better ones.

So folks, thanks for trying to keep me honest. ;-), and for all the wonderful comments.

Starting February 1st I’ll move on to a new self-challenge.

No California Highway Funds were expended in the making of this image.

That looks almost like some construction we have currently goin on on the I-15. Funny shot, the thumbnail made me chuckle a bit.

Robin, even in the thumbnail the hardhat made me laugh.
Yes, trying new things and learning from comments is a great way to push yourself. Congratulations on the exercise.
Are you plowing under this concept or continuing among other things?

You've paved the way for the rest of us!
snootydog01-Feb-2006 04:48
clever as usual. I think a good challenge would be to spend a month mastering dodging and burning. Love you in the hard hat here!

Great idea to always challenge yourself to look at things in a new way!

So, when you will have an underwater photo at your monitor, you´ll wear a swiming suit? Lol.

I agree with you about trying to do the things in order to learn, and is so good when you have the chance of being criticized, that really helps to improve.
In this picture, great colors and lighting. The composition is great and a good point because you are in front of the lens instead behind the viewfinder. Good exposure!!

I can't wait to see what the next challenge brings.

Thanks Laine... that was exactly the kind of commentary and critique I was hoping this post today would elicit. Appreciate you taking the time.

Personally I think you did some of your best work. The sunset, the surf, the bloom, the hint, old San Diego, the funeral...both images & the SP's Jan 13th both are my pics & if undoctered even better.

you wont have the health and safety people on your doorstep now :-)

God idea to wear a helmet! Working with the computer can be dangerous! Very dangerous! ;)
