The Castle

Near San Isabel, Colorado

We toured this incredible edifice which is the work of one man who has built it stone by stone single-handedly without any help, any architectural plans,, and without any zoning or other permits.

Over the past 36 years, in defiance of assorted government agencies, Jim Bishop has been erecting this monument to his insistent belief in individual rights and freedoms.

I can't imagine that this structure could have been captured any better than you captured it. Voted.

I came here in april of 2001 just before I was sent to Korea. It is still beautiful and it is nice to see the work progressing. Awesome perspective. I enjoy seeing Colorado again, even if it is through your lens.

A fantastic tribute to man's ingenuity, determination, creativity, contrariness, imagination and goodness knows what else. It is amazing and well captured, Robin. I add my thanks.

Interesting story. Thanks for sharing Robin. Your picture nails the size and unusual architecture wonderfully. I too love the blue sky and angle of the shot.

I wonder if he's related to the guy here who did a similar thing & is still fighting the local authorities after 20 yrs. Strange looking place, but to each his own...

It should be allowed planning permission on the basis of being a 'Site of Outstanding Photographic Beauty'! LOL

Ir's a good picture of, errr the lord knows what.

You have to admire the man's contrariness in the face of potential demolition at the hands of local authorities! Can you imagine the building permit application? Please describe the structure you are planning to build: "This really big, gothic, stone/ iron and tin structure, with these sort of ball-shaped martinets on top of spires, and a dragon's head sticking out the front."
