May 7: Garden Scene

Rancho Bernardo, CA

I’m going to spend the day reading a new Lucas Davenport novel, watching the Padres play St. Louis, and generally not do any photography. So I stopped by my friend Tom’s home this morning to admire his garden and take a few pictures.

This is Saint Francis Assisi overlooking one corner.

In Photoshop (both Elements and CS) as the last step:

1. I select the customer shape tool (U) and then choose the shape called “Square, Thin Frame.”
2. With the menu option set to “Paths” I then drag the custom shape over the background layer of image (which has already been reduced to the final layer) and have it fit the size of the image.
3. Then I click on Paths Tab, and control/click on the “work path” shown in that tab which will convert the path to a selection.
4. With the selection active, I then create a new layer (control J). That is what creates the basic frame.
5. Typically then I’ll go to the blending options on that frame layer (which will already be selected as a result of the control J) and choose stroke (outside at 2-3 px.) I choose a stroke color that compliments the colors in the image.
6. Then usually, I will also choose bevel/emboss and play with that a bit until I like the look of the frame.
7. Then of course I flatten the image and save it.

I like this framing technique...care to share it?

So, let me see, you're not going to do any photos but here's, one! You're going to spend the day reading a novel, but then plan on going to a Padres' game. I would say it is a pretty full adgenda.

Nice, Robin. I don't know too many of the Saints, but he's one of my faves.

St. Francis seems to be giving you the eye. Lovely photo. Reading, huh, on a pretty day like this.

I would prefer to sit in this garden to read & soak up some some rays....be sure to use sunscreen though.

Reading and watching sports when you could be taking pictures and sitting in front of your computer?
Are you mad?

Very nice photo, Robin. This is such a nice St. Francis statue. He looks so gentle and wise.

I love Lucas Davenport!
