The Lilly

Rancho Bernardo, CA

Like April 14a I am playing a bit in Photoshop. Here my goal was to catch the beauty of the flower and to knock out all background. I created a new layer using the multiply mask and then brushed the flower back to “original.” Then a black brush was used to fill in the spaces that didn’t go black.

I merged that mask layer and then made a new one and applied a filter-other-high pass at about 15. Blending mode changed to soft light.

Merged those two layers and boosted the saturation a bit.

I guess I didn't want you to think that I couldn't take a pretty picuture.

14a (NEXT) is a stitch shot.

Wow, I keep coming back to this one. The flower is stunning especially against the black background.

Well done, layers in PhotoSHop offer many oppertunities to "fix" photos.
My PaD from yesterday used a layer mask to blur the background.

And one other thing, I know you snapped the stitch photo(s) from your car, but did you actually do the photo stitching in your car as well? That'd be a real trick.

Lovely photo. I used to do this to eliminate backgrounds for products on my retail web site, but I always used the polygonal lasso. I don't know if the clipping mask method is any easier, but it certainly makes you feel more artistic to "paint" the flower back on. Same goes for selective coloring.

Robin, this is wonderful. I've made so many attempts to catch the beauty of this flower with little success. Thank you for the thorough explanation of your process.
